Say Whaaaat? Awards
After watching a fair amount of the Grammy's last night, I am in an
award show mood today. So after reading this story in the New York
Post, I thought about creating a new award motif. An award that
recognizes people or organizations for their absurdity. I call them
the "Say Whaaaat?" awards. The absurdity has to be so absurd that it
makes you go "whaaaat?" that can't be true. But, of course, it is
true. So with that, the first "Say Whaaaat?" award in the history of
The Pop Tort goes to....
Mercy Medical Center on Long Island in New York State.
According to news reports, Dr. Anthony Colantonio, who worked at the
hospital, complained to both state officials and apparently to law
enforcement about the hospital’s allowing a physician's assistant to do
invasive surgical procedures. Now the state is finally investigating –
after three of these patients died, including a 19-year old. The
doctor told the New York Post, "In my opinion, those patients were
assaulted.” But when he complained, what did the hospital do? It
brought up Colantonio on disciplinary charges, calling him
"disruptive." Say Whaaaat?
(Maybe law enforcement can’t step in. But hopefully the civil justice system will be able to afford these families some measure of justice.)
