Breaking up is hard to do

Cellphone We all know that breaking up is not an easy thing, especially for the one being dumped.  But what if you're trying to break up with your cellphone company?  It's not only difficult, but sometimes you also have to fork over a hefty sum.  This could change, however, thanks to a class action brought by a group of California cell phone customers who say these fees violate the law.  The L.A. Times ran an interesting editorial on this point.  Here is an excerpt:
 

Jurors in Alameda County Superior Court may soon decide whether your former carrier owes you a refund -- unless federal regulators intervene on the companies' behalf. Testimony began this week in a class-action lawsuit by disgruntled ex-subscribers of Sprint Nextel who claim the early termination fees they paid violated California law. After that, the court will hear similar claims by disaffected emigres from Verizon Wireless, AT&T, T-Mobile and Cingular. Meanwhile, claims from the other 49 states have been consolidated into a class action before an arbitrator in New York. (Read on)
