NY Daily News Says "Dump dangerous docs"

Today, the New York Daily News insightfully opined about the the need to increase transparency and oversight of dangerous doctors in New York state.  Here is a clip:

Gov. Paterson is proposing a crackdown on dangerous doctors that would be a breakthrough for patient safety in New York. The Legislature should fill his prescription with speed.

Paterson's plan, crafted by Health Commissioner Dr. Richard Daines, would begin to reverse his own department's tradition of kid-glove treatment for incompetents in white coats.

Many of the reforms have been long sought by the Daily News and consumer advocates.

The total secrecy that blankets misconduct probes would end. The department would reveal the names of physicians who have been accused of wrongdoing. No longer would patients be clueless about these potentially dangerous doctors.

Officials also would be required to screen malpractice settlements - and investigate doctors who rack up more than their share of lawsuits. Such common sense has been the law in other states for some time, but New York's medical establishment has resisted it. (Keep reading)
