It's one thing when the Bush Administration’s failed energy policy leads to obscene price-gouging and profiteering by Big Oil, but when this policy is maintained off the backs of not just average consumers – but also, literally, endangered polar bears, ThePopTort.com draws the line!
We’re talking about the new regulations from Department of the Interior to help with the current gas crisis. Could it be new regulations to encourage investment in renewable energy? No. Create a windfall profits tax? No. Reign in OPEC? No again. Provide immunity to Big Oil for killing polar bears? Oh yes.
As we’ve blogged before, the Bush Administration never misses an opportunity to immunize hugely profitable multinational corporations who do really bad things. Barely a month ago, the Department of the Interior listed polar bears as a "threatened species" under the Endangered Species Act. But in an astounding 180, the same Department of Interior decided to provide immunity to seven oil companies who search for oil and natural gas in the polar bear and walrus habitats near the Chukchi Sea in Alaska – in case they kill these "threatened species," which the rest of us are obligated to protect, by the way.
