The U.S. Chamber of Commerce has been getting buried by horrendous press lately—whether for its bizarre
climate change denial, opposition to the Al Franken Anti-Rape Amendment, bragging that it has 3 million members (when it only has 300,000), spending $100 million on a campaign to defeat consumer-friendly regulatory reforms, and the list goes on…
So, how are the PR geniuses at the Chamber responding? The same way they always do—by saying that their problems are caused by trial lawyers!
David Chavern, the Chamber's chief operating officer, sent out a letter to local chambers last Friday saying the bad press had been organized by its “normal adversaries,” with “trial lawyers” topping the list.
Fortunately, as Steve Pearlstein pointed out in the Washington Post, “the world is finally catching on to the [the Chamber’s] game.” Longtime chamber members like Apple, Nike, and PG&E have been tearing up their membership cards in increasing droves, and local chapters such as the Greater New York Chamber have been saying of the national branch, “They don’t represent me.”
So much for the U.S. Chamber’s “vast trial attorney conspiracy” theory.
